DOCUMENT ID: 1254-02 SYNOPSIS: During the installation, the system hangs and/or kernel panics OS RELEASE: 2.4 PRODUCT: Solaris x86 KEYWORDS: x86 install system hang kernel panic SYMPTOMS: Unable to install X86 DESCRIPTION: During the installation, the system hangs and/or kernel panics. SOLUTION: There may be a "memory parity" problem if, during installation, after passing the boot menu, getting the copyright message, and getting the dial, the dial freezes. The light on the CD-ROM stays on for 30 seconds and then stops, and the kernel core dumps with page faults and traps. To fix: Remove and inspect all memory (SIMMS?) cards, make sure the parity and speed is consistent amongst all cards. Other possibilities: - Disable Fast SCSI option - Disable Sync negotiation of the controller - Disable connect/disconnect option of the controller - Disable DOS BIOS > 1 Gig driver recognition flag CPU - Disable external (secondary cache) - Enable internal (cpu) cache. - Disable the shadowing - The IRQ and Base Addresses must be distinct. Adaptec Card: - Must be in enhanced mode. - if secondary card (i.e. if IDE Hard disk present): IO add 330 IRQ 11 ROM Bios DC000 DMA 6 JLS: Other things to try is to remove all unnecessary cards, Sound cards network cards etc. Make sure all remaining cards are Supported in the Hardware compatablity List (HCL) as well ar the CDROM drive especially if you are using a EIDE CDROM drive. Also some of the High Speed SCSI cdrom drives may cause panics. DATA APPROVED: 09/25/95
