DOCUMENT ID: 1285-02 SYNOPSIS: Relationship between ftp and inetd.conf OS RELEASE: 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5 PRODUCT: Solaris x86 KEYWORDS: FTP inetd.conf DESCRIPTION: System security requires restriction of many inbound services. FTP is a very popular utility to perform file transfers. Can outbound FTP connections be allowed while restricting incoming connections ? SOLUTION: Inetd is the gatekeeper for most inbound connections from network sources. Entries in the /etc/inetd.conf determine which services are active. A pound sign "#" is the recognized comment character. Commenting the FTPD line will deactivate inbound connections, while allowing FTP outbound connection. DATE APPROVED: 04/11/95
