DOCUMENT ID: 1482-02 SYNOPSIS: Japanese Processing with IUS OS RELEASE: Solaris x86 PRODUCT: KEYWORDS: kanji japanese kterm x11 x window DESCRIPTION: Adding support for Japanese processing to Interactive Unix SOLUTION: Interactive Unix does not come with support for Japanese processing. It is possible, however, using The X Windowing System to add support for text-based applications that need to do Japanese processing. If you are running X, you can install the application "kterm". Kterm stands for Kanji Terminal, and it will properly display japanese text. This will make it possible to run applications that do text-based Japanese output. Kterm is capable of displaying SJIS, JIS, and EUC encoded Japanese. Both of these applications are freely distributable, and can be found via ftp at export.lcs.mit.edu. For X11R5 versions, cd to R5contrib, and get the file: kterm-5.2.0.tar.gz Kterm alone works great for reading and displaying Japanese. However, it does not come with a Front End Processor (FEP) for doing Japanese input. In order to be able to enter Japanese, you can use the program "kinput2" which is a publically available FEP. In order to perform kana to kanji conversion kinput2 requires the installation a conversion server. kinput2 supports (among others) the Wnn conversion server. kinput2 is available via ftp from export.lcs.mit.edu in the R5contrib directory as: kinput2.tar.Z Wnn is available from bash.cc.keio.ac.jp in the directory pub/Japanese/Wnn as: Wnn4.2.tar.gz DATE APPROVED: 07/28/95
