SYNOPSIS: How to share CDROM drives over a network

OS RELEASE: Solaris 2.3, 2.4

PRODUCT:

KEYWORDS: cdrom share filesystem

DESCRIPTION:

It is possible to configure Volume Management to automatically share
mounted CDROMs. This allows all the users of a network to effectively
share a single CDROM drive. While having many people reading from a
single CDROM at a time can dramatically slow down access time, this
provides a solution to the problem of needing to move around external
drives, or the case where an external drive is not available.

This allows users from a remote system to mount the CDROM filesystem via
NFS.

SOLUTION:

In order to have Volume Management automatically share mounted CDROMs,
edit the /etc/rmmount.conf file.

Add the following lines to the end of the /etc/rmmount.conf file to make
newly inserted CDROMs automatically shared.

 # File system sharing
   share cdrom*

With the above addition, when a new disk is inserted, Volume Management
will automatically mount it on the local system, then "share" it, thus
making it mountable by remote systems.
