SYMPTOMS:    motif static libraries are not available


DESCRIPTION: 

On 03/07/95 an RFE 1195396 was filed requesting static libraries be
included in the Sol2.4SDK. 


SOLUTION:

The request was evaluated 09/06/95 and rejected the most significant
reasons:

o there is a significant reduction in the size of storage media required
  to both deliver and host software. 
 
o there is a significant reduction in the working set of desktop
  software. 
 
o static linking can cause hidden interface dependencies that make
  system evolution significantly harder over time. 
 
In the past, there was a failure to ensure proper binary compatiblity
between releases.  A methodology policy decision was made to ensure the
public symbols would remain constant.  The ABI will thus be the same
between releases.
