SYNOPSIS: "Shrinking" your DOS partition

OS RELEASE: 2.x

PRODUCT: Solaris x86

KEYWORDS: shrinking DOS partition

DESCRIPTION:

If your system is loaded with DOS on the entire drive (i.e. one big
fdisk partition) and you want to "shrink" it, to make room to create
another fdisk partition for Solaris, there is no supported way to do
this.

You would have to backup any data you want to be saved on your DOS
partition, and then fdisk your drive to create the new partitions, and
then reinstall or restore your DOS partition from backups.

There is a publicly available program called "fips", however, that many
customers have had success with. It will allow you to "shrink" your DOS
partition without destroying it.

This program is not provided by or supported by Sun in any way. We do
not provide instruction on using it. It is freely available on the
internet, use it at your own risk. Remember to set file type to
"binary" when downloading it.

Anonymous ftp sites that have fips:
(locations are subject to change)

oak.oakland.edu
SimTel/msdos/diskutil/fips12.zip

wuarchive.wustl.edu
/systems/ibmpc/simtel/msdos/diskutil/fips12.zip

NOTE: You will have to use "pkunzip" or a compatible decompression
program to unpack these archives. Pkunzip is available via anonymous
ftp or Compuserve. Remember to set file type to "binary" when
downloading it. pkz204g.exe is a self-extracting archive (this means
when you "get" it onto your local hard drive, run the executable
pkz204g.exe and it will unpack itself). Anonymous ftp sites that have
pkunzip (locations are subject to change):

oak.oakland.edu
/SimTel/msdos/zip/pkz204g.exe

wuarchive.wustl.edu
/systems/ibmpc/simtel/msdos/zip/pkz204g.exe
