DOCUMENT ID: 1122-02 SYNOPSIS: Changes to the Adaptec SCSI driver for Solaris x86 OS RELEASE: PRODUCT: Solaris x86 KEYWORDS: aha_docmd adapter idle error fast 154xcf SCSI disconnect DESCRIPTION: When installing the operating system onto the hard drive Solaris reports the error: "aha_docmd: adapter won't go idle" and/or the installation fails when used with hard-disks that conform to the "FAST SCSI" spec. SOLUTION: Some FAST-SCSI hard disks that share the bus with the 154xB, 154xC and 154xCF have firmware problems. The fix is a software workaround available in a newly revised driver. This fix also works on the 1540B, which is not rated to work with FAST SCSI-2 drives, such as the ST11200N, although Seagate for one, does not support its use with this adapter. Workaround - The workaround used to be to disable the disconnect/reconnect handshake option on the Adaptec controller itself during installation of x86. This problem has since been fixed and is available as a patch. Get the latest driver update disks and install the revised 1540 (aha) driver and DO NOT turn off the DISCONNECT option in the Adaptec setup program during boot time. To order the January maintenance release diskette for x86 from our Order Operations Department at (415) 336-7459. The part number is ISOS-210-FP-JA4. Or, if you prefer, the disk image may also be downloaded off of CompuServe (GO SUNSOFT - Solaris x86 Library) or from the Internet. To pull the image off the net, simply ftp to ftp.uu.net as anonymous and the file name is "x-86-driver" in the /vendor/sun/sun-doc subdirectory. DATE APPROVED: 10/10/95
