SYNOPSIS: Install with Driver Update fails if /var is a file-system

OS RELEASE: 2.1

PRODUCT: Solaris x86

KEYWORDS: install driver update /var file system patch distribution disk

SYMPTOMS:

Patches from distribution diskette will not install.

DESCRIPTION:

The installation of Solaris 2.1 for x86 from a Driver Update Boot
diskette requests the insertion of the Driver Update Distribution
diskette after the selected operating system packages have been
installed from the CD-ROM. The distribution diskette also installs some
patches that require access to the /var directory. If /var has been
defined as a separate file-system, it is not yet mounted and therefore
inaccessible, generating installation errors.

SOLUTION:

1) If your installation is not dependent upon a critical patch,
you may reinstall the Distribution Diskette by executing the
   following after booting the system:

	mkdir /tmp/Drivers
	cd /tmp/Drivers
	cpio -icuvdB < /dev/fd0
	./inst_patch.sh

2) If you are dependent upon the Driver Update Boot diskette in
order to utilize a new host-bus adapter driver, then you are
going to have a problem. In this case the only solution is to
let /var remain as a directory on the / filesystem. If you
anticipate large files being created there, then create a
softlink between a sub directory in /var to another filesystem
   with enough room.
